As Taiwan’s insurance market matures, brokers are playing an increasingly important role. Insureds rely on brokers to understand complex products such as D&O coverage and aviation insurance especially when the insurer does not have a presence in Taiwan. Brokers are also effective advocates for their clients in the claims process. But since brokers also earn commissions from insurers, it can be difficult to tell whether the broker is legally an intermediary as defined by Taiwan’s Civil Code or the mandated agent of the insurer.
